No one likes to be lost. Few things are more frustrating than knowing there’s a destination out there for you but not being able to reach it. But when you discover your way, there is a flood of relief. You exhale. You’re found!

Lost & Found will help your students see that we all experience separation from God because of our sins. But the fantastic news is that our Father stands ready to extend forgiveness and welcome home the lost. And it doesn’t stop there. When students give their lives to Christ, they find a new identity in Him.

God means for us to be found. It is His great desire. With Lost & Found, students will not only encounter the Gospel and what it means to follow Jesus, but they will deeply interact with the cost of The Cross. Give your students an opportunity to discover the meaning of being lost and the inexplicable joy of being found.

Teach Lost & Found and students will learn that our identity is found in the freedom that comes through surrendering to God and His ways.

Session Overview

Session 1: Losing the Relationship

What We Want Students to Learn: We experience separation from the Father because of our sin.

Scripture: Genesis 3; Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 3:23-24

Session Snapshot: God created humankind with relationship in mind. When we look at Eden, we see God, Adam, and Eve existing in harmony. They walked together. They talked together. But then, when Adam and Eve rebelled against God, one of the consequences was that the close relationship they enjoyed with God was lost. They were physically expelled from the Garden and from the unique relational connectivity with God they enjoyed. Sin has caused separation between people and God ever since. And while the wonderful news is that there is hope in Jesus, this session will allow your students to focus on the separation sin causes.

Session 2: Finding the Way Home

What We Want Students to Learn: The Father stands ready to extend forgiveness to the lost, welcoming them home.

Narrative Scripture: Luke 15:11-32; John 14:6; Romans 10:9–10

Session Snapshot: The Parable of the Prodigal son illustrates two points. First, it once again shows how rebelliousness creates separation. But unlike in session 1, in the prodigal son we see the hope of the Gospel played out. Yes, sin causes separation. But a father’s love restores relationship. In Christ, we see our Heavenly Father extend grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation to all who believe in Jesus. Through faith in Christ, what was once lost is now found.

Session 3: Living in the Freedom Found

What We Want Students to Learn: That as Christ-followers, our identity is found in the freedom that comes from surrender.

Narrative Scripture: Matthew 16:24-26; Galatians 5:13

Session Snapshot: There is a paradox in Christianity: only through surrender do we find real freedom. Those who don't have a saving faith relationship with God don't understand this equation. They think that to find yourself, you must pursue a life where your desires drive your journey. This is no way to find true purpose and freedom. Only by surrendering the leadership of our lives to Jesus and allowing His ways to shape our course will we ever know true freedom.

Session 4: Celebrating When The Lost Is Found

What We Want Students to Learn: We were designed to be in a healthy community with other believers who reach out to the lost and celebrate when they come home.

Primary Scripture: Luke 15: 8-10; Romans 12:15-17

Session Snapshot: What defines value and worth? Is it performance? Is it meeting the pre-set standards of the world that surrounds us? People judge value by appearances, wealth, popularity, and many other factors. But God's equation says that our value is secured when Jesus speaks for us. The Gospel is God going on record as a God who seeks the lost. And when the lost are found, God rejoices. As His people, so should we. This session will not only challenge students to evaluate their level of joy in seeing others discover new life in Christ, but it will also encourage them to consider how connected their lives are as people who are part of God’s family.
