Overcoming Elephants in the Room is a series all about how to address some of the biggest issues facing your students. Addiction, Bullying, Cheating and Racism are all examples of some “elephants in the room”- big topics that are hard to discuss. In this series, we’re going to attempt to tackle them- or at least begin addressing them. In Romans Paul writes, “Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” In each of these weeks we’re going to attempt to overcome one of these “elephants in the room” that represent evil in our world, with the goodness of God’s design and desires for us.

    "OVERCOMING ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM" COVERS THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES AND PASSAGES:

    • Session 1 – Addiction - (Romans 7:15-20; Galatians 5:19-26; Ephesians 5:18) | Chasing dopamine hits and giving into addictions are pretty common choices in the world we live in. But as Christ followers, we’re called to freedom and to pursue Jesus over everything. How do we resist the addictions of the world and choose dependence on Jesus rather than pursuing our own pleasures? What does that look like practically in our day-to-day life? Let’s discover that together. 

    • Session 2 – Cheating - (Proverbs 11:3; Proverbs 28:6) | Getting good grades and succeeding in school are some of the most important things that can happen in the life of our teenagers. But what are you willing to do to get the grade? When the world encourages cheating to get ahead are you willing to have the integrity that God requires of each of us?

    • Session 3 – Racism - (Luke 10:29-37) | Racism is certainly an issue that’s been brought into the cultural mainstream. As a result of that, often we approach this conversation but feel out of touch, intimidating or come at more in terms of politics rather a conversation about human dignity and value. We’re going to attempt to lay aside our bias and look at this important topic through Jesus’ eyes and overcome racism with empathy.

    • Session 4 – Bullying - (Ephesians 2:10; Romans 12:21; Psalm 139:13-14) | Bullying is an Elephant in the Room. Especially if you’re around it and not sure what your role is in it? In this lesson we’ll discuss how we, as humans are viewed as God’s masterpiece. And also, what to do in these 3 different scenarios of when you’re being bullied, when you’re the one bullying, and how to know if that’s the case, and what to do if you see or experience bullying.
