youth worker boost: god's hand

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

“Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness.”—Psalms 48:10

Remember thos, “For Dummies” series of books? They sold millions of copies. Of course, we all know the idea by now: to simplify difficult subject matter, such as chemistry, music theory, or Latin, and present it in a way an ordinary person can understand. While many “experts” surely turn their respective noses up at such lowbrow execution, the books have helped millions of people gain a working knowledge of a variety of complex subjects.

Sometimes I like to think the authors of the psalms used a similar technique in describing God.

The psalmist here talks about the hand of God. Now, using human qualities to describe the Lord is a big word called anthropomorphism. The full picture of the “who and what” of God is something too wonderful for us to fully understand. We try as best we can to grasp all of what God is, but the reality is that if we stretch our minds as far as possible, we probably don’t even come close to grasping the wonder, the beauty, and the majesty of God. It’s not that we’re dummies [OK, maybe some a little more than others ☺], it’s that God is simply too awesome for comprehension.

As you lead your students to a deeper understanding of God, remember to help them grasp the wonder of the Lord, and to hold in tension the great truth that God is both knowable, and beautifully complex.

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you today is that you would get a glimpse of the awesomeness of God, and be reminded how truly amazing it is that we get to be in relationship with someone so amazing.
