Who I Am: A 4-Lesson Bible Study For Guys

Lesson 1

• Main Passage: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
• Purpose: To grasp that our identity is rooted in the new life made possible by our saving faith in Jesus.
• Session Snapshot: One of the most important things a student can do is to know who they are and where their identity is found. If you’ve been saved by faith in Jesus, you don’t have to question your identity. You are God’s. You belong to Him. Your identity is hidden in Jesus Christ with God (Colossians 3:3). This powerful truth is foundational for us as Jesus-followers. Before students can go deeper into exactly how they are to conduct themselves as a Christian teenager in the world they live in, they must first grasp what it means to have their identity found in Jesus.  

Lesson 2

• Main Passage: Colossians 3:5-10
• Purpose: To recognize that a new identity in Jesus Christ can only be developed by growing in the knowledge of Him.
• Session Snapshot: Sometimes, students care more about the world’s definition of who we are supposed to be than God’s definition. But we can’t allow culture to define our standards. For students to truly understand their identity as a new creation in Jesus, they must grow in the knowledge of God (Colossians 3:10). This will put them on a narrow, challenging path, but it will lead them to the heart of their true identity and purpose. If we don’t know Jesus, how can we ever please Him? A growing knowledge of Jesus must be at the foundation of any life with Him.

Lesson 3

• Main Passage: Matthew 5:13-16
• Purpose: To answer the question, “What would others say is my identity?”
• Session Snapshot: As we continue to lead students in examining this topic of identity, we will focus this week on how our identity is evidenced to those around us. We want to challenge students to consider how they are living out what they believe. When people look at their lives, does it lead them to look to God?

Lesson 4

• Main Passage: Mark 9:33-37
• Purpose: To understand that a big part of our identity is that of a servant leader.
• Session Snapshot: Jesus calls believers to be counter-cultural, which means looking differently than the world around us. One of the most explicit examples of this in the Bible is the contrast between worldly leadership and Christian leadership. As Christians, your students live in the tension of trying to follow their goals while following Jesus at the same time. And as they do, the message they get from the world is different from the one they get from the Word. In this lesson, we will explore Jesus' example of leadership by learning how to become a servant.
