Youth Worker BOOST: The "Wow!" Moment

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.”—Psalm 8:3-5

We're fortunate to live in a time when technology and innovation are constantly taking us to “new heights.” We've almost reached the point where if we can imagine it, someone can make it happen. I still find myself amazed sometimes at what computers, tablets, and smart phones can do. And that's just today. Imagine what they will do in the future! I have found myself more than once looking at technology and simply saying, "Wow."

David had his own "Wow!" moment when he experienced God through the natural world around him.

I can relate to David. Sometimes at night when I'm in my backyard, or with my students at camp up in the mountains, the spectacular display of the heavens compels me to break out in worship to God. But for David and me both, it’s not really the "created" the gives birth to this sense of awe, but rather the Creator. God is awesome in nature, in science, in technology and in everything else! As we think about how we lead teenagers to know God more and better, let's never forget that the most powerful lessons don't always happen in coffee shops or classrooms. What would it take for you to teach students about God's hand in creation while actually surrounded by His creation?

Those "wow" moments can do wonders for expanding our concept of God. They helped David. And they can help your students, too.

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you today is that you would never loose your awe for God, that you would regularly have your own "wow" moments, and that you would lead students to do the same.
