Youth Worker BOOST: Delightful Things

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”--Psalm 1:1-2

A lot of people, even Christ-followers, see the Bible as a big list of "don'ts." In other words, Scripture is just a bunch of rules which are hard or impossible to follow.

It seems like students may be especially prone to this. (And we probably own a share of the blame for this.)

Does the Bible tell us we're not supposed to do some things? Of course it does. The Bible deals with a lot of sinful behavior we're told to avoid. But Scripture is also full of positive examples to follow and Godly principles to live by. Sometimes the call for what to avoid and what to practice are actually side by side, like they are in the first Psalm. The Psalmist says DO NOT:

  1. Walk in the counsel of the wicked
  2. Stand in the way of sinners
  3. Sit in the seat of mockers

In the very next verse, we're told what to DO to find happiness: love God’s Word so much that it's constantly on your mind, in your conversations, and guiding your life each day.

We can help students (and ourselves) find direction in their Christian lives by heeding the "dont's" in the Bible. But the psalmist reminds us happiness may best be found in living the "do's."

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you today is that you would model for your students an active faith, a faith that willingly seeks to "do" and "be" wha and who God wants us to.
