Youth Worker BOOST: Brokenness

Youth Worker BOOST: Brokenness

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"The LORD said to Job: 'Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!' Then Job answered the LORD: 'I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer—twice, but I will say no more.'”--Job 40:1-5

Those of us who work with students usually have times where we desire for our students to be what we may call, “broken before God.” Simply stated, we want our students to have a time of repentance in their lives. We want them to discover the forgiveness that comes from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The question is often, if not always, How to facilitate this experience?

In my experience, the answer is to lead students into encounters with God.

In today's passage, we see Job in just such an encounter. Job immediately confessed his unworthiness when he came into God's presence. I think we can expect the same thing from our students in these situations. So how do we help students encounter God? I think this happens in a lot of different ways: in service, in worship, in prayer, in Bible study, and so on . . . The goal of what we do as youth ministers should be to consistently bring students in God's presence. Over all my years in ministry, the moments where I've seen students confess sin and really understand their brokenness before God have been unplanned, but not necessarily unexpected. We can't know how God will reveal Himself in a student's life. But we can set the table, so to speak for students to be primed for an encounter.

Job discovered brokenness when he encountered God. Our goal should be to facilitate these experiences to the best of our capabilities, then watch for God to reveal Himself.

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you today is that you would know God in such a real way that you can recognize Him when He moves in your students' lives.
