Youth Worker BOOST: More Than A Little Warm

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."--Revelation 3:15-16

The New Testament city of Laodicea was part of the Roman province of Phrygia. The city was a major commercial center and was located in an area that had a lot of trade traffic. Laodicea had much going for it but one thing was always a drawback for the town: the drinking water. Nearby hot springs made the water supply lukewarm and almost impossible to drink.

The point John was trying to get across to the church at Laodicea was that their religion was lukewarm.

Now some people say this means the Christ-followers at Laodicea were once on fire for God and had cooled down. Still, others say this is a reference to those who never caught on fire, spiritually speaking of course, in the first place. Whichever interpretation you go with the point is virtually the same: God is not happy with faith that lacks the passionate fire of real commitment. Are we as youth ministers going to be satisfied with just enough Jesus to help us keep doing our jobs? Or do we want the fire of spiritual devotion to move us to change the world?

I don't know about you, but I know what I want. Let's commit to do whatever it takes to stay close to Christ, abiding in Him, feeling the fire of real, true devotion.

Our prayer for you: Our prayer for you today is that you would do whatever it takes to rekindle your fire for following Christ, and that this fire would be contagious to your students.
