Youth Worker BOOST: The Big Crowd

Youth Worker BOOST: The Big Crowd

ym360 knows youth workers. We know what an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging job youth ministry can be. There are days when your spirits are sky-high, and there are days when you could use a bit of a “pick me up” from God's Word . . . That's why we're happy to offer Youth Worker Boost, one of the many valuable resources on the ym360 Blog.

Boost is a short, weekly piece of encouragement designed to, well, “boost” your spirits and encourage you as you minister to students. We consider it yet another great opportunity to serve you and your ministry.

"Yet despite Jesus' instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases. But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer."--Luke 5:15-16

Don't you love it when a big crowd shows up for a youth event? There's an energy that you can really feel. Don't you wonder if Jesus, being fully human as well as fully God, felt the adrenaline rush of the big crowd? If He did, we can understand. But at the same time, we know it wasn't the adrenaline that powered Him.

What can we learn about Jesus' power source?

Notice that Jesus found a way to get alone and pray to God. Jesus innately knew His power to minister to the crowds came from His relationship with the Father. Even though we know Jesus and the Father were one, we see some pretty awesome occasions of Jesus spending some time away from the crowds, communicating in prayer with God the Father.

The energy from the crowd is short lived, but the power of God is a gushing fountain that never dries up. As youth workers, we spend a lot of time in big group settings with students. But remember that our spiritual strength does not come from high energy events.

Your ability to minister, teach, and to have staying power in the world of youth ministry is directly related to the quiet times you spend alone with God.

Our prayer for you: We pray that you would seek God out in prayer, searching out the strength only He can give. We pray that you would find the encouragement and the passion to embrace your calling and renew your passion for seeing teenagers' lives transformed by a cloer walk with Christ.
